Central Taiwan is a geographic cross section of the island, representing many different terrains, from ocean shore to rugged mountain peaks. Although it shares in the economic boom of the rest of the island, including the explosive growth of the computer industry, its surrounding countryside also reflects the agricultural foundation of the country. As in the American midwest, life is a little slower here without having to sacrifice conveniences found in Taipei or Kaohsiung. Taichung, the third largest city of Taiwan, is the economic and population hub of central Taiwan. With its many universities and colleges, Taichung is also a significant educational and cultural center (a great place to study Mandarin). It is also best known as the best place from which to visit the mountain resort areas of Ali Shan and Sun Moon Lake. This region is known for its great climate, much more temperate than many areas of Taiwan, and its warm and friendly people. Other big advantages of living in Taichung are the lower cost of living and lower levels of industrial pollution. |
